What causes Tsunami
Tsunamis are often caused by earthquakes, and
sometimes submarine volcano eruptions.
While tsunamis caused by earthquakes are usually less violent, waves caused by submarine
volcanic eruptions can reach heights of 125 feet above sea-level, as it was in 1883 when
waves
caused by the Great Krakatau Volcanic Eruption killed thousands of people and wiped out
numerous coastal villages. Not all earthquakes result in tsunamis, only those underneath
or near
oceans. Thus, the Pacific Ocean experiences the most tsunamis because of the large number
of
earthquakes that occured there.
